Black History Month 2025
Uplifting and Celebrating Our Community
Black History Month celebrates Black history, culture, accomplishments, and the contributions of Black people to our society. The month honors not only the past, but also, Black futures and possibilities. Carter G. Woodson, famed historian and founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History established Negro History Week in 1926 and was observed the second week of February. Fifty years later, President Gerald Ford recognized Black History Month in 1976. Prior to its official recognition many Black students and educators at Kent State University were some of the earliest proponents to celebrate Black History Month in 1970.
We invite the campus community at Cal State Fullerton to engage in dialogue and reflection about Black excellence and joy through events, programs and arts that celebrate and amplify Black people in February like the trailblazers at Kent State University. Join us as we uplift and celebrate the Black community.

Black History Month Kick-Off Celebration
Monday, February 3, 2025
11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., Central Quad
A vibrant celebration that honors Black history, celebrates Black excellence at CSUF, and fosters campus unity. The event will feature interactive stations, including a Historical Education Booth highlighting Black History Month and notable Black Titans, a Social Media Booth for photos and a pledge wall, a Sign-Making Booth for the campus solidarity march, and various Resource Booths.

Black Barbie: Film Screening & Research Day

Join the Department of Child and Adolescent Studies and College of Health and Human Development to explore the influential role of Black Barbie and related themes of race, identity development, and media representation as depicted in the Netflix documentary "Black Barbie." The film chronicles the legacy of this iconic doll and her impact on the development of Black girls and young women.

- Keynote speaker Dr. Monique Ward, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan and leading expert on children's and adolescents' media use and development of gender beliefs, sexuality, and body image
- Opportunities to learn about CSUF resources to support Black students, faculty, and staff

- Screening of "Black Barbie," a documentary film recently nominated for an NAACP image award

CSUF Super Sunday 2025

For 20 years, the CSU has partnered with predominantly Black and African American faith-based organizations to host Super Sunday during the month of February. CSU Leaders bring an empowering message to faith-based partners throughout California about the importance of preparing for college and the accessibility of higher education. This year, CSUF Super Sunday is taking place on Sunday, February 23, 2025, and the theme is "Faith in our Future."
Cal State Fullerton will be continuing its partnerships with: Second Baptist Church, Friendship Baptist Church, and Christ Our Redeemer AME Church. We also hope to deepen these long-lasting relationships and encourage collaboration extending beyond this event. This year, we will take an active role in their church services, engaging directly with the Youth Ministry and bringing Titan Pride to their community!
